Earlier this month, Ford Performance announced that its racing school instructor and Baja champion John Williams would be competing in this year’s Best in the Desert race, which spans 500 miles of rugged terrain between Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada. Williams tackled that event behind the wheel of the FPRS Race Ford Bronco, while Ford Performance driver and founder of RTR Vehicles, Vaughn Gittin Jr., was also slated to compete alongside co-driver Loren Healy in the Bronco Raptor that won last year’s Baja 1000. Turns out, this Ford Bronco driving duo of teams fared pretty well, which was true of the overall Blue Oval lineup in general.
The Ford Bronco enjoyed tremendous success at the 2024 Best in the Desert race, in fact, with the Bronco DR driven by Brad Lovell and Jason Hutter securing the win in Class 8000, for starters. Gittin Jr. and Healy also brought home a win in the stock mid-size vehicle class, and this strong day was capped off by a first-place finish in the 4600 stock class by Bailey Cole and his own Bronco 4600 racer. As for John Williams and the Ford Performance Racing School 4600 Bronco, that duo managed to snag a podium finish by crossing the line second.
“Parts are a hundred miles an hour out there,” Hutter said of his and Lovell’s tenth win behind the wheel of a Bronco thus far. “There’s ditches, there’s everything. All the rocks at the end – and this thing just cruised right through all of it. It was bad-ass. What an honor to drive this DR, and to drive with Brad.”
“The Bronco Raptor is so impressive,” added Gittin Jr. “Considering how stock this Bronco Raptor is and knowing what we threw at it for over 550 miles is a huge testament to the strength, durability and fun that the Bronco platform offers to its customers. We did the entire race in the same Baja Goat mode that I run in my personal Bronco. Earning the win is awesome but the fun and experience we had while doing it was epic!”
