Ford EV Charging Adapter Drought May Ease Up Soon

Following an agreement with Tesla, Ford EV owners now have access to that automaker’s rather large Supercharger network, which they can utilize via a special adapter. This piece enables Ford EVs – which are equipped with Combined Charging Standard (CCS) ports – to charge via Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), expanding the sheer number of available chargers by a large margin. However, there’s just one problem – this Ford EV charging adapter has thus far proven to be difficult to procure, though that may be changing soon.

According to this recent post to X, the Tesla charging team has reportedly ramped up production of its NACS adapter to 8,000 units per week, while automakers are also reportedly ramping up in terms of suppliers as well. This should also mean that the Ford EV charging adapter supply will be increasing over the coming weeks and months, as has been expected for some time – though there have been several delays along the way.

Orders for this NACS adapter opened up in late February, and owners of Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E models are eligible to get one for free. However, as Ford Authority reported in April, The Blue Oval began emailing customers to inform them that their adapter had been delayed due to supply chain issues. That problem continued into June and even early this month, though the automaker issued a statement noting that it was still shipping NACS adapters to Ford EV owners, and shortly thereafter, it extended the deadline for owners to secure their free adapter, after which it will be sold for a retail price of $230.

So put NACS sockets on all the new cars already. That’s what we’re waiting for. Among other things, like smaller, cheaper EVs.

Because if people don’t want small, cheap gas cars, they’ll certainly want EVs

Because if they’re losing tens of thousands on larger, expensive EVs, the sure path to profitability is to make them cheaper.

Don’t worry, Jim. You’re doing a great job repeating talking points as you’ve been taught.

If you have a great running EV, it is cheaper to use this adapter. Besides, most EV owners charge at home with a J1772 Level 2 charger. The Tesla home charger is very expensive.

It’s like the EU forcing Apple to adopt USB.

Because the government is forcing automakers to adapt to tesla charging system? Your analogy makes no sense.

I thought the agreed upon standard was CCS1/J1772.

They are making a mess changing this as they don’t have the inverse of this for those who have CCS1/J1772.

But I also find it curious that the Tesla plant ‘Somewhere in Upstate NY’ could have simply said ‘BUFFALO’

Don’t need an adapter, nor more than 10 minutes, to refuel my Ford.
