The Ford Explorer Timberline – a more rugged, off-road capable version of the long-running model – debuted back in 2021, ushering in a new moniker for The Blue Oval in general. At that time, Ford noted that the Timberline name would soon be added to other SUVs in its lineup as well, though it wound up only being one – the Ford Expedition Timberline, which debuted as part of that model’s 2022 refresh. However, it now seems as if Ford plans to ditch the Timberline name for another already in its arsenal.
According to Automotive News, The Blue Oval is expected to add a Ford Explorer Tremor and Expedition Tremor model to its lineup, news that the automaker itself recently revealed to dealers. This means that customers will be able to purchase a Ford Tremor SUV or pickup across nearly the entire lineup, save for the Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport, which won’t be adding a Tremor to their respective list of offerings.
This news certainly makes it seem as if the Ford Explorer Timberline and Expedition Timberline will be killed off in favor of the Tremor, though it isn’t clear if these upcoming Tremor variants will be optional packages or full-fledged trim levels like the Timberline. The refreshed 2025 Ford Maverick Tremor is now a trim level rather than an optional package as before – joining the Ford Ranger and Ford F-150 – though it’s still a package for the Ford Super Duty. Notably, the Ford Explorer Timberline wasn’t included as part of that model’s refresh for 2025, though it has been expected to return at some point, while the Expedition is set to receive its own refresh for 2025, too – though that model hasn’t been revealed yet.
As Ford Authority previously reported, FoMoCo’s original plan was to utilize Timberline for its off-road-focused SUVs, while Tremor name would be present on its pickups of that same type. However, it deviated from that plan in Australia recently, where it just revealed the new Ford Ranger Tremor – followed by the Ford Everest Tremor – perhaps as a sign of things to come for the entire lineup.
