Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Explorer sales (see running Ford Explorer sales) in Q2 2024 were flat for 46,338 deliveries while again leading the mainstream large three-row crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. Starting this quarter, we’ve added another model from crosstown rival GM, this time the GMC Acadia, the Chevy Traverse’s corporate twin, since the all-new model is bigger and now the same size as the next-generation Traverse.

The Honda Pilot moved up to second place posting a 17 percent increase to 36,232 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander, the larger of the two crossovers from Toyota, is now ahead of its smaller sibling for the first time since the first-ever model entered the marketplace, posting 30,246 deliveries to take third. Meanwhile, the VW Atlas placed fourth with a 30 percent bump to 29,062 units. The Hyundai Palisade took fifth with a 44 percent jump to 28,492 units, while the second entry from the Hyundai Motor Group, the Kia Telluride, placed sixth with flat sales, moving 28,122 units. The Toyota Highlander slipped to seventh from second, with a 52 percent drop to 28,075 units. The Chevy Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), in eighth, posted a 35 percent dip in sales for 23,987 deliveries, while the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) saw sales fall 59 percent, moving 10,008 units.

Sales of mainstream large three-row crossovers were down three percent to 327,156 units in Q2 2024, meaning Ford Explorer sales slightly outperformed the segment average.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for midsize crossovers that overlap with large crossovers like the Ford Explorer – either in price, seating capacity, or both. Despite the fact that these models are physically smaller than the Explorer and its direct rivals, they are often cross-shopped. These overlapping vehicles include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating sold at a similar price point to the Explorer, including the Ford Edge (see running Ford Edge sales), Chevy Blazer (see running Chevy Blazer sales), Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan Murano
  • Nameplates that represent both two-row and three-row models, such as the new Jeep Grand Cherokee family

Jeep’s two-row variant is more of a Ford Edge rival, while the three-row one is a Ford Explorer competitor. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit Grand Cherokee sales against Edge and Explorer combined 62,860 deliveries, putting The Blue Oval ahead of Jeep by over 10K deliveries.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford Explorer sales, though flat halfway into the year, individually still led the field of mainstream large three-row crossovers. It may be impacted by a generational changeover as the refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer finally arrives at dealers, with units now shipping in earnest. We expect the updated model to boost sales going forward.

About Ford Explorer

For 2024, the Ford Explorer drops the 3.3L V6 Hybrid engine option along with the related Limited Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid trim levels. Otherwise, the 2024 Explorer carries over essentially unchanged.

The 2025 Ford Explorer debuted in February with new tech and a redesigned interior. It is available in the Active, Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trim levels with a slightly different look on the outside thanks to a few minor styling updates. For 2025, BlueCruise is available on the Explorer for the first time ever, available on Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trims. Additionally, the 2025 Explorer is the first Ford-branded vehicle to get the new Ford Digital Experience software, which was developed in conjunction with Google. It runs on a larger 13.2-inch infotainment screen, which is coupled with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Notably, a Ford Explorer Timberline revival is still happening.

Refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer ST

Two powertrain choices are available on the 2025 Explorer, with the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost offered as standard on Active, Platinum, and ST-Line trims, and the twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 EcoBoost offered as standard on ST and optional on Platinum. Output remains the same, with the V6 producing 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission, and all four trims come standard with rear-wheel-drive, with all-wheel-drive available as an option.

With a hybrid powertrain option dropped for the 2024, it will still be absent for the 2025 Explorer, and here’s why.

So sad to see the Edge dropped from the F lineup. Would have been great to see the Edge updated and offered as a Hybrid model. Two of our neighbors have the Edge and are probably going to trade in for a Toyota Hybrid Highlander at the end of their lease.
