The Ford Explorer Timberline debuted back in 2021 as the latest off-road-focused addition to The Blue Oval lineup, a type of vehicle that consumers have been clamoring for more of in recent years. The Explorer Timberline continued to hang around through the 2024 model year as well, but was strangely absent from the debut of the refreshed, 2025 Ford Explorer lineup. However, as Ford Authority reported in early February, the Ford Explorer Timberline always seemed likely to return at some point, and that is precisely what’s going to happen.
At the recent 2025 Ford Explorer media drive event, The Blue Oval told Ford Authority that the Ford Explorer Timberline will in fact be revived at some point in the future, though it also stopped short of indicating when that might happen. In the meantime, the 2025 Explorer lineup will consist of the Active, Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trim levels.
It is worth noting that the Timberline didn’t debut alongside the redesigned 2020 Explorer lineup either, and instead, came along a few months later. However, Ford Authority spotted a 2025 Ford Explorer Timberline prototype out testing (albeit with the pre-refresh front end design intact) a little over a year ago, and Ford China added the Explorer Timberline to its own lineup in April 2023 as well – though that model is quite different from its American counterpart.
Meanwhile, the refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer has already begun shipping to customers, along with its more luxurious counterpart, the 2025 Lincoln Aviator. Along with the pared down trim level lineup, the 2025 Explorer has been treated to updated exterior styling, new tech, and the same updated version of the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost as the 2024 Ford Mustang. The 2025 Aviator features similar revisions, but it’s only available with one powertrain, for now – the twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, which generates the same 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque as the outgoing model.
We’ll have more on the 2025 Ford Explorer soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford Explorer news and comprehensive Ford news updates.
