Ford F-150 Driver Hydroplanes Into Highway Barrier: Video

Driving in the rain can be quite hazardous, as most of us are well aware, particularly when water begins pooling up on roadways. Throw in other factors like worn out tires or an inexperienced, inattentive, or downright impatient driver, and there’s certainly a potential recipe for disaster when driving in wet weather.  In fact, rain has caused its fair share of crashes over the years – particularly due to an effect known as hydroplaning – and it also recently led to this crash involving a Ford F-150.

As we can see in this video recently posted to Reddit, the driver of this Ford F-150 – which appears to be a 2011 Harley-Davidson model, given its unique side stripes – was clearly driving too fast for conditions. Shortly after passing the vehicle recording the action, the driver attempts to brake, but instead, winds up spinning around and striking the barrier alongside the center portion of the highway. The Ford F-150 continues to spin several more times before finally coming to a halt on the rather wet road.

Of course, it’s unclear from this footage what sort of condition the truck’s tires were in, as that could have contributed to the crash, but the driver was also certainly going a bit too fast given how much water there is in the road at the time. It also doesn’t help that the driver seems to have hit the brakes pretty hard when he began to lose control, as it’s better to ease off the gas rather than panicking in this type of situation.

I hope he realized, it’s not a boat! [OC]

Regardless, hydroplaning is a dangerous phenomenon that has led to its fair share of accidents over the years, which is precisely why Ford filed a patent for a hydroplaning prevention system a couple of years ago. That system would be capable of finding a way around that type of hazard, or, at the very least, controlling the steering and throttle/brakes to prevent the vehicle from spiraling out of control.

The lack of weight on the rear wheels and tires is probably a contributing factor for this in pickups.

Always. Some people just shouldn’t drive.

They have to. The govt is clamping down more and more on fuel standards without any concern for safety.

      It definitely is.
I got new all-terrain tires at the start of the year yet my 2015 F-150 starts to hydroplane at like 50mph in some of the rain storms we’ve had this summer.

Luckily every time it’s happened I was able to pull off onto a back road where I can go slower, but having it start isn’t a good time.
