The Ford Kuga PHEV wrapped up 2023 as Europe’s top-selling plug-in hybrid of any kind, which was actually the third consecutive year that was the case. However, things have changed a bit through the first portion of 2024, as the Ford Kuga PHEV only managed to rank second on those same sales charts through the first half of the year, giving up first place to the Volvo XC60. Now, new data shows that this remained the very same order in the month of July, too.
This news comes to us from JATO Dynamics, revealing that the Ford Kuga once again ranked behind the Volvo XC60 in terms of new registrations in July 2024. Ford sold a total of 4,217 Kuga PHEVs last month, trailing the XC60’s 4,363 units by a small margin – just 146 units, or around three percent, in fact. These numbers did reflect a 16 percent year-over-year decrease for the Kuga PHEV, however, while the XC60 gained 26 percent versus July 2023 – something of a surprise, given the fact that the Kuga was just treated to a refresh early this year.
Regardless, the overall PHEV market in Europe declined by 10 percent year-over-year as well, and all-electric vehicles only faired slightly better with a six percent drop. Overall new vehicle sales declined by two percent as well, to 1.03 million units, though interestingly, SUV sales set a new record by accounting for 54 percent of those sales. As for why electrified vehicles are seeing declines all of a sudden, JATO Dynamics notes that there is a lot of uncertainty regarding future legislation aimed at those vehicles at the moment, among other factors.
“The lack of clarity around the incentives for – and future of – EVs continues to present a barrier to consumers considering an EV. These factors, alongside the low residual value of EVs contributed to the decline seen in July,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics.
