Rumors surrounding the possibility that we may one day see a four-door version of the Ford Mustang, as well as a potential off-road variant, have swirled for years now. One thing we do know for certain is that the all-new-for-2024 Ford Mustang lineup doesn’t represent the end of future variants for the S650 generation model, as there will surely be more joining the stable in the coming years. Now, a new report indicates that at least a couple of those variants are going to be quite different from what we’ve come to expect from the iconic model over its 60 years in existence.
According to Automotive News, FoMoCo recently showed dealers renderings, mockups, and photos of some future Ford Mustang variants, which included a four-door coupe reportedly called the Mach 4, as well as a lifted, off-road, Baja-style model with rugged tires, an RTR-modified Mustang EcoBoost with a $40k price tag, and a high-performance, V8-powered convertible that looked a lot like the older Shelby GT350/GT500 variants, albeit, sans any Shelby badging.
Ford didn’t provide any timelines for these potential Mustang variants, and it collected the phones of attending dealers before showing them off, meaning that no photos leaked out. Regardless, dealers in attendance saw this as Ford’s attempt to aggressively expand a vehicle that competes in a segment that other automakers have largely abandoned, and believe that The Blue Oval is seriously considering putting those variants into production.
Interestingly, Farley admitted that a four-door Ford Mustang remained a strong possibility in an interview conducted just this past May, but also poured proverbial cold water on the idea of an off-road-focused model at the same time. Meanwhile, RTR Vehicles just announced that it’s teaming up with Fox as it aims to create pre-titled, pre-built vehicles that it sells itself, rather than the just the vehicle packages that it currently offers which are installed at Ford dealerships.
As for this mysterious Shelby-like high-performance variant, Ford Authority exclusively reported in early May that it may not utilize the Shelby moniker when it launches, as some top Blue Oval executives are fans of using names conceived by Ford, rather than those licensed from third parties. Additionally, Ford’s new master contract agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union from last fall hinted that the Flat Rock Assembly plant – which currently only builds the Mustang – may soon add a mysterious new product to its assembly lines.
We’ll have more on these potential new Ford Mustang variants soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Mustang news and non-stop Ford news coverage.

TERRIBLE
IDEA
If they go through with this, I’ll be early in line. I went to a Mercedes since Ford stopped building sedans. I would buy a Mustang but two door is a no go for what I need.
A Sedan would be a welcome addition….if it’s not Porsche Panamera priced….a Mustang Raptor? I’ll pass. Ford already has the Bronco. Why not consider a Mustang UTE and resurrect the Ranchero name. Nothing could/would compete.
Or, bring back the Edge ST. My wife bought a 2024 Edge ST, w/turbo, while she still could when she heard the Edge was going away. Loves it! Last week, at that stop lights, a guy in a newer Camaro thought he has a fast V-8, but he could not loose the ST. He sure seemed surprised the a SUV could keep up with him, and it was a Ford against his GM.
The Ford Edge ST, ‘Sport Technology’ showed him what it can do.
I have seen this before and I’m not sure how I feel about it
Ford has completely lost the plot on the Mustang and is destroying the brand.
In the early ’60s, Henry Ford strongly rejected 4-doors on the Mustang. They didn’t belong then and they don’t belong now.
Ford, make a new product line!
They could have called it a Falcon since it WAS a 4 door Stang essentially with its own history. Marketing and Jim Farley seem to like the idea of stretching the nameplate thin. If these guys were around in the 80/90s the Probe would’ve definitely been the new Mustang.
no , no , and a big NAH!!!
How about just making a 4×4 Mustang truck. Maybe a Mustang station wagon. Let’s see what other stupid ideas would Ford like to make a Mustang into?
I think a “cherry 2000” model in the off road Mustang. Another movie link like they did the bullet version.
Why not just a reincarnation of the once-popular Fusion? Why slap “Mustang” on everything?
I’m hoping they’ll do a 4-door Lincoln, based on the Mustang, at Flat Rock.
If Ford would put this much effort into giving Lincoln a proper Lincoln LS sports sedan and Mark9 2-door coupe/ convertible done right this time off S650. Then grow the wheelbase and give us a proper RWD Continental sedan with coach doors and convertible sedan. But don’t worry, Ford would rather show a 4-odor Mustang. Can a minivan-Transitang be far behind?
GTD’s successor ought to be a Lincoln coupe. Even if it’s their only car, it can make an impact, promoting follow-through powerful other Lincolns. 4-door Mustang should be talking-point-placeholder name only. Fairmont, then Torino/Gran Torino for high trims. Using fwd-based sedan names is a bad idea. Crown-Vic is a bad idea, Explorer is the cop car now.
FFS Will SOMEONE please take over Ford and get it away from Farley!
Four doors is NOT A MUSTANG.
Off-road IS NOT A MUSTANG.
Farley’s at it again, coming up with ways to ruin Ford.
I think adding a 4 door Mustang would be a good idea, it must evolve going into the future. Many people have said they love their Mustang but need to sell it because the are starting family and need more room. Just look at the many great high performance 4 door sedans from europe.
The 4-door sprots sedan belongs to Lincoln not Mustang. Lincoln is already starved of exciting product. wake the sleeping giant please
Damn you boomers got your panties in a twist.
You guys complained there was no RWD Ford performance sedan. Here it is.
Off-road Mustang? Porsche and Lamborghini somehow pulled off hybrid variants of the 911 and Huracan. Bring it.
They don’t have a 911 performance sedan, even Porsche was confident enough to name their 4 door performance car something else instead of 911 Sedan or something stupid like that.
Make it a 4 door Lincoln like the 1961 and look like the 1961 with the suicide doors and it would sell like hot cakes. A monkey could run this company better than Farley. Want a new 4 door seden call it a Gran Torino not Mustang.
Motor Trend Magazine showed a rendering of what the 2003 Lincoln LS was to look like. They showed it a s a 4-door convertible with smaller rear doors but 4-doors all the same. Styling was inspired by the 2003 Lincoln Continental concept. If only it can be built.
They already had a high performance 4 door sedan. It was the australian Falcon, but because it wasn’t made in america they rejected it continually to try to protect the Crown Vic. And now they are both dead.
Yea, What he said! ^^^^^^^^^
Back in the 60’s, Ford built a Mustang Station Wagon show car. Of course, it never saw production.
Build a four door sedan but do not call it a Mustang. Continue to build the Maverick but build one with a mid gate option
This is what happens when people who don’t love, or even like, cars take over. Ridiculous.
Interesting ideas, but terrible badging. To me the Mustang name is sacred and should always stay true to its heritage.
At least this is a step up than the dumb move to call Ford’s electric CUV a Mustang.
I’m cool with a four door mustang. Needs to be awd though with a 405hp ecoboost 3.0L ST option and a 450hp 3.5L ecoboost RS option both with dark horse packages. If not those engines scrap the ecoboost and bring out an new variant of the Barra I-6 turbo engines from Australia. ONLY WAY ID EVER BUY A MUDTANG AGAIN!
Bring back the galaxie nameplate of you want a performance sedan. If you want something else built on the same platform as the 650 bring back the cougar. If you want to increase sales, bring back affordable entry level CARS!
I hope they bring back a fast gas power sedan! I currently work for a ford store but yet drive a kia stinger.. Would love to get back into a vehicle that I sell so many of. Something fast and can fit the whole family without being over 55k!
