Ford Mustang GT Racers Successful At Tasmania 2024

Race 17 and Race 18 of the 2024 Australian Supercars Championship were not short on drama on August 17th and August 18th, 2024, but the Ford Mustang GT teams pulled through with blisteringly fast race cars. The Blue Oval followed a runner-up result in Race 17 with a win in Race 18.

Chaz Mostert, driver of the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT, did his damnedest to track down race leader Nick Percat in the No. 10 Chevy Camaro in the closing laps during Race 17 on Saturday. Mostert elected to take three tires on a late-race pit stop and was turned back out on track in hot pursuit of Percat. However, Percat had the advantage right to the line, winning the race 0.61 seconds ahead of runner-up Mostert.

However, the strong showing in Race 17 gained Mostert valuable points, cutting even further into the lead, which is currently held by Will Brown, driver of the No. 87 Camaro.

Race 18 fell more in The Blue Oval’s favor. Cam Waters’ No. 6 Mustang hustled to the front of the field, overtaking Brown and gapping him with ease. The margin of victory was close to six seconds, putting Waters solidly out front at the line when the checkers waved.

“I’m so happy to get the win,” Waters said. “I got a good start and so did Tommy [Randle], and he fought hard for Turn 1 which was fine, and he just made a little mistake at Turn 4 and ran wide, but I’m gutted for him, he probably should be up here on the podium with me. I was just trying to keep a small gap to Will and trying to let him cook his tires, and I knew Tommy was in there, and with 20 to go I started to push on.”

And speaking of Randle, the driver of the No. 55 Mustang tangled with the No. 88 Camaro of Broc Feeney in the closing laps. Feeney passed Randle for third, but when Randle attempted to fire back and reclaim the position, he contact the back of Feeney’s race car and sent the Camaro for a spin. Randle was hit with a 15-second penalty and was ultimately credited with an 18th-place finish.

“That was totally my fault,” Randle admitted in a postrace interview. “Probably should have gotten the move done properly… all this would have been avoided.”
