Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2020-2022 Ford Police Interceptor Utility models over the potential for engine fires.
The defect: in affected vehicles, in the event of an engine failure, engine oil and fuel vapor may be released into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.
The hazards: an engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury.
Ford Motor Company is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.
Components: engine long block
Affected vehicles: select 2020-2022 Ford Police Interceptor Utility models equipped with either hybrid or gas engines built between November 10th, 2018, and August 1st, 2022.
Number of vehicles affected: 85,238
The fix: dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software. In addition, dealers will inspect for connecting rod bearing failure and if necessary, replace the engine long block. All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge.
Owners are advised to park and shut off the engine as promptly as possible upon hearing unexpected engine noises, or after experiencing an unexpected engine power reduction, or seeing smoke from the engine compartment.
Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which are expected to begin on August 19th, 2024. The Ford reference number for this recall is 24S52.

ANOTHER PCM software update to avoid the real cause. Once this gets out, the media will have a field day and Ford will be in trouble. Everyday owners are one thing but law enforcement…yikes.

So what are they doing to the PCM reducing the HP to protect the rod bearing?
That was my though also Rob. How else do you keep a frail engine from failing but choking off power?
Our agency had 3 out of 4 engine failures from a group of 2022s. The third one burned to the ground. Ford acted like they knew nothing of the issue and after 8 months of squabbling, I finally just filed an insurance claim. Funny how this recall reads a lot like the wording in my initial assessment of what happened to our car. We will not be buying PIUs anymore.
I forgot to add, all three engine failures happened under 5500 miles, two happened under 5000 and before the first oil change.
