The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is a true legend in the automotive world, a high-performance, homologated rally machine that was produced in scant quantities and is a highly coveted and pricey collectible today. The hand-assembled model was famous largely for its turbocharged 2.0L powerplant designed by Cosworth, along with its beefier brakes, slick bodywork, and what is a rather unique rear spoiler, to say the least. Now, the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is being reborn as a machine called the Carbon Piranha.
The Carbon Piranha is actually based on a real Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, but is being reimagined for the modern era by the Auto Vision Club. Once that project is completed, the car will be given away to one lucky member of the club (which costs £99 or $130 USD to join), but in the meantime, those same members are being asked to provide feedback on the process, which can help them earn points that will increase their odds of bringing it home.
The Carbon Piranha’s build process will be documented via YouTube over the next year or so in partnership with Cosworth, ASM Auto Recycling, and the Digital Manufacturing Center in Silverstone. The donor car is being completely stripped down, after which all of its parts will be evaluated and either reused, replaced, or recycled, with many others being reverse engineered and 3D-printed to save weight.
Once a final, digital version of the build is created, the real thing will be rebuilt using carbon fiber body panels, a full-blown chassis and suspension redo, and a complete engine rebuild performed by none other than Cosworth itself. It’s an intriguing concept for certain, and one that should produce something we have yet to see – a modern-day version of one of the most iconic Blue Oval performance vehicles ever created.
We’ll have more on the Carbon Piranha soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Cosworth RS500 news and non-stop Ford news coverage.
