In van-hungry Europe, Ford has long held multiple positions on the sales charts, which boded well for the arrival of the all-new Ford Transit Custom just last year. There, the new Ford Transit Custom picked right up where its predecessor left off, which is also true of the UK market. In fact, the Transit Custom is arguably even more popular in that part of the world, where it has previously ranked as the best-selling vehicle of any kind – and that trend continued in July 2024 as well.
According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Ford Transit Custom recorded 3,718 sales last month, which was light years ahead of its light commercial vehicle competition. In fact, the second place Ford Transit racked up 1,744 sales over the same time period, which is less than half of the Transit Custom’s total. From there, the next-closest competitor was the Volkswagen Transporter, which recorded 1,413 sales in July.
Year-to-date, that also helps extend the Ford Transit Custom’s sales lead, as FoMoCo has now sold 25,857 units through the first seven months of 2024, versus 17,727 for the regular Transit. As Ford Authority previously reported, the Transit Custom was the UK’s best-selling van in 2023, as well as its top-seller over the course of the first half of 2024, too.
As for the overall market, new light commercial vehicle registrations in the UK totaled 24,689 units in July, which is 8.5 percent lower than July 2023 – although year-to-date sales still remain 2.7 percent higher than the first seven months of last year. That breaks a record-equalling 17 consecutive months of growth, but demand remains strong, as year-to-date LCV sales actually represent the best first seven month performance of the year since 2019 in the UK.
