The Fox Body generation Ford Mustang has quickly become a coveted collectible these days, which isn’t terribly surprising given the fact that many of us grew up either owning one or wishing that we did. However, aside from the many factory variants of the Fox Body Mustang that Ford churned out over the years, there were also some interesting – and sometimes quite rare – mashups that exist as well, though we doubt many are quite as rare or obscure as this 1990 Ford Kelly Python.
This 1990 Ford Kelly Python is up for auction at Cars & Bids right now, and it’s reportedly one of just 12 that were built in total after a failed attempt at making it a regular production model. Regardless, it’s based on the Fox Body Mustang – at least underneath its unique exterior – which features fiberglass bodywork with pop-up headlights and Thunderbird taillights. That bodywork was designed by Alvin A. Kelly, who leaned on inspiration from a concept designed by Eugene Bordinat in the 1960s.
Other than its unique bodywork, the Kelly Python was basically a Fox Body Mustang in every other regard, including inside the cabin, as well as under the hood, where one will find the same naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8, which was factory-rated to send 225 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The car did feature its own unique suspension setup and rode on a shortened version of the Mustang’s chassis, however.
Kelly planned to distribute his unique Fox Body Mustang based creation through Ford’s dealer network, but as is often the case with these types of projects, financial issues prevented that from happening. Now, this rare and quite nice example is looking for a new home, and it’s easily one of the most unique such models we’ve ever seen – along with other obscurities like the ASC McLaren versions of the Fox Body Mustang and Mercury Capri.

This looks likes K.I.T.T. if it were a Mustang instead of a Pontiac Firrbird.
