Actor-turned-race-car-driver Frankie Muniz will take on the Mustang Challenge at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the series’ fourth event on August 31st through September 1st, 2024. He’ll drive a Ford Mustang Dark Horse R during the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Lone Star Le Mans weekend.
Muniz is well-known for playing the titular character on Malcom In The Middle, but he’s always had a passion for motorsport. He broke onto the NASCAR circuit in February 2023, driving a Ford race car in the ARCA Series at Daytona. Since then, he’s partnered with Ford Performance to compete in the Xfinity Series and Truck Series. Prior to his NASCAR debut, he competed in the ChampCar Atlantic Championship from 2007 through 2009.
Muniz said that he’s thrilled to be a part of the Mustang Challenge, which has allowed international motorsports stars the opportunity to compete in other disciplines. For example, the Mustang Challenge invited Supercars Championship’s Cam Waters and IMSA veteran Joey Hand to compete in select NASCAR Cup Series races.
“I was a part of the Mustang Dark Horse R launch, and ever since, all I’ve wanted to do is race in the Mustang Challenge,” said Muniz in a statement. “To have a full field in its first races this year, you know it’s going to be so fun and competitive. I was thrilled when the opportunity came to drive the Dark Horse R at COTA. This is one of the few road courses where I’ve yet to compete, so I’m excited to experience a new course and series with the Dark Horse R.”
He added, “As a driver, you just want to get the most experience you can, in anything you can, and Ford Performance has afforded me that opportunity. I’ve been on this NASCAR journey, but this is another incredible opportunity to race in a major series. I can see doing more races like these in the future.”
We’ll have more on the Mustang Challenge soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Mustang news and comprehensive Ford news coverage.

Ask Frankie why he left Champ Car. Because he was put on probation for 3 races for his infractions and then his attitude. Then a few years later, he went to Mazda MX-5 Cup and the 1st race he argued with the officials, because his car was 40 lbs under weight after qualifying and he had 2 days to weigh the car, before Qualifying. Then, at the Start of the Race, he tried to show off, and took out 2 cars but he was able to continue.
He was then told he could not race for 3 races because he was on probation and did not do as told. He really lost his temper and mind and swear at the officials and almost had to be restrained.
This is all true, as I was there and part of the situation.
