Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a bed utility system that may be used in future Ford pickups, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 31st, 2023, published on August 1st, 2024, and assigned serial number 0253712.

Ford has filed quite a few patents exploring possible ways that it could make the beds of its pickups more useful and capable in the future, as we’ve seen via numerous patent filings. Those include ideas for a multi-panel bed, different types of cargo management systems, and an accessory attachment system, to name just a few. Now, this newly-published patent keeps that trend going by introducing us to an idea for for a bed utility system that may be used in future Ford pickups, too.
The concept here, as has been the case with several similar patents, is to figure out ways to add utility to future Ford pickups – in this case, by using a system that consists of side walls and a rear wall that could extend up from the floor and serve as an impromptu bed extender of sorts. Currently, bed extenders are typically flipped inward and outward when needed, but the problem is, they take up some bed space when they’re not in use, which presumably wouldn’t be the case with this system.
Interestingly, the rear wall of this system would also feature a built-in step, which would eliminate the need for one placed in a tailgate or other area, too. It’s certainly an interesting idea, and one that could prove to be quite useful – particularly since truck beds have gotten smaller in recent years as they make room for larger cabs.
