Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for methods and systems for power level adjustment that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on December 9th, 2021, published on August 20th, 2024, and assigned serial number 12065123.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent years, we’ve seen a handful of vehicles launch that give owners the ability to adjust power levels for varying circumstances – in some cases, by using a different key or simply selecting a different drive mode. Now, with the emergence of hybrid power, all-electric vehicles, and an increased usage of forced induction on traditional ICE engines, this sort of practice is more viable than ever. Now, this newly published patent presents us with a way to adjust power levels that may be used in future Ford vehicles.
As Ford points out in the patent, there are times when the driver of a vehicle may need or want more or less power, whether they’re simply driving to work in traffic or heading out to the track on the weekend. In EVs, varying output can sometimes be challenging due to component temperatures and the battery’s state of charge, however, which isn’t ideal for extracting maximum performance for tack days.
Thus, Ford proposes this system, which would be able to customize power output in a vehicle based on user inputs. This means that users could set their own “power profile” to store in the vehicle, with one even being dedicated specifically for track use. Additionally, the system could even detect when the vehicle is at the track and make those adjustments itself automatically, or do so based on things like powertrain temperature or steering angle – a potentially intriguing application, especially in all-electric vehicles or hybrids.
