Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for IOT interference detection technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 9th, 2023, published on August 15th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0275506.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has explored the idea of using connected vehicle technology to detect the presence of certain things in the past, having filed patents for ideas such as an unauthorized device drain detection system aimed at preventing thieves from nabbing one’s signal from a key fob or smartphone that unlocks a vehicle’s doors, as well as a hidden camera detection system capable of sensing the presence of unauthorized recording devices, then warning occupants. Now, this newly published patent keeps that theme going with a new idea for IOT interference detection technology that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
IOT security devices (or Internet of Things) are devices that can be controlled remotely with an aim of doing all sorts of things, such as video monitoring, detecting intrusions, or completing remote functions and issuing automatic alerts. IOT devices can can cause interference with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, however, which allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles, infrastructure, networks, and even pedestrians.
Ford is exploring the use of V2X technology in a number of ways, and clearly understands that this could be an issue. Thus, it proposes using this system to create a virtual bounding box surrounding a vehicle that’s capable of identifying whether or not those messages are coming from the appropriate place, and aren’t being interfered with. It’s a potentially important piece of tech given Ford’s interest in V2X, and one that may very well come to fruition as a result.
