As to be expected with the advent of a new vehicle, The Blue Oval has been struggling with its Ford Mustang GT3 race car since it was introduced for the 2024 racing season. Based on the Mustang Dark Horse, the Mustang GT3 just hasn’t had the speed that its competitors have enjoyed, but last weekend’s IMSA race at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) signals a turning point in the new race car’s trajectory.
On August 25th, 2024, the Ford Mustang GT3 took to the track in the season’s only GT-exclusive race. According to a report from Racer.com, both Mustang GTD Pro entries qualified third and fourth. The pole in the GTD class went to the Ford Mustang GT3 of Giammarco Levorato and Corey Lewis. The Blue Oval didn’t win on Sunday, but it did produce a second-place result, as well as a fourth-place finish as Harry Tincknell and Mike Rockenfeller guided the No. 64 Mustang to its first podium finish.
“It’s another advancement for the Mustang,” Tincknell said after the race. “It’s been super strong. It earned the GTD pole yesterday with customer team Proton Competition and the first podium for us today in GTD PRO. I think every race we’re learning. It’s a brand new car this year. We’re taking giant leaps.”
Morale has been good around the Ford Multimatic Motorsports garage, and that, in part, is due to improved performance of the Mustang.
“It started this morning when [Ford Multimatic Motorsports team principal] Larry [Holt] had a meeting with all us drivers,” said Joey Hand, who splits the No. 65 Mustang GT3 with Dirk Mueller. “He said, ‘Today’s the day that we’re going to execute.’ That’s what we did. In the background, we’ve been getting all the details right – like great pit stops, which we had again today.”
Whatever Ford is doing with the Ford Mustang GT3, it seems to be working – the race car is in extremely high demand for the 2025 racing season.
