Low Cost Ford EV Crossover May Appear After Midsize Pickup

A few months ago, we learned that Ford has had a skunkworks team developing a low-cost EV platform in total secrecy for the past couple of years. Originally, reports indicated that the first Ford EV to utilize this platform would be a $25k (now $30k) crossover slated to launch in late 2026 – followed by a compact pickup and dedicated rideshare vehicle – which was rumored to be built at the Louisville Assembly plant, a facility that currently produces the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair. However, a recent announcement from The Blue Oval itself quickly cast some doubt on that speculation.

As part of its broader electrification strategy shift that was revealed earlier this month, Ford announced that the first model underpinned by the new low-cost platform would be a mid-size pickup – perhaps a Ford Ranger EV – not the aforementioned crossover. As such, it made many wonder if the low-cost Ford EV crossover had been delayed or canceled altogether. However, according to a new report from Automotive News, it seems as if that particular model may not dead, after all.

Rather, the future low-cost Ford EV crossover is apparently still in the automaker’s plans, though it likely won’t arrive anytime soon – according to this report, The Blue Oval plans to build it by 2028, though those plans are still subject to change based on how the EV market develops in the coming years. Ford hasn’t yet chosen a location where it may build this model either, though prior reports indicated that production would take place in Louisville.

As Ford Authority reported earlier this week, Ford Escape production will reportedly end at the Louisville plant by the conclusion of 2025, after which The Blue Oval will focus on the Ford Bronco Sport as its compact crossover of choice. Thus, it would certainly make sense if the low-cost crossover replaces it on the production line – and perhaps even utilizes the Escape nameplate – but it’s currently unclear if that will actually happen.

  • You can't believe any of this crap. Ev's have cooled, tariffs have complicated things for all the brands, and that $30k price is for dreamers. Nothing is going to happen for the next five years of any significance except MSRP's will continue to rise. China uses it's low labor costs and minimal regulations to build cheap cars. All domestic brands will never match their prices even if you doubled those prices. American consumers get screwed again.

  • EVs have 'cooled' because nobody will make a cheap one that people can afford. The market is wide open for anybody who wants to be the next Henry Ford and put America on wheels - electric this time.
