It’s no secret that The Blue Oval’s decision to create its own dedicated commercial business – dubbed Ford Pro – was a good one, as that division has since raked in massive profits for the automaker. It also prompted one of Ford’s rivals to create its own commercial unit dubbed Stellantis Pro, along with Ram Professional, which falls under the former entity, but operates as its own separate business unit, regardless. Now, Ram is targeting Ford Pro in the U.S. with a new, small van that’s currently in the pipeline.
This news comes to us from the Detroit Free Press, which reports that Ram plans to offer a small commercial van in the U.S. yet again, following the discontinuation of the ProMaster City. This move comes in direct response to Ford’s decision to discontinue the Transit Connect in the U.S., it seems, though Stellantis is clearly targeting Ford Pro’s overall success as a potential way to rev up its American business – one that’s been fledgling as of late.
“Our main competitor is Ford, and their whole Ford Pro organization and product and service lineup,” said Ram and Chrysler CEO Chris Feuell. “They’ve made very impressive inroads in growing the business as well as the profitability of the business that’s definitely bolstering the company on both the vehicle sales and the connected services and fleet management sides of the business, and so we definitely have our eyes set on beating Ford at some point in the near term.”
It’s certainly no surprise that Stellantis is working to gain some market share in the U.S. commercial vehicle space, given the fact that it has previously stated that it planned to do precisely that. However, it’s an especially critical move for Stellantis, which has seen its profits tumble in the U.S. as of late – prompting it to offer buyouts for select white collar workers and even consider axing some of its 15 brands as it aims to turn its American business around.
