Thomas Randle, driver of the No. 55 Supercars Ford Mustang GT, showed aggression during Race 18 at Symmons Plains Raceway on August 18th, 2024 – maybe a little too much. Racing for position, Randle contacted the No. 87 Chevy Camaro of Broc Feeney, causing Feeney to spin out as the pack cruised by. Tickford Racing CEO Simon Brookhouse has now come forward and said that he’s pleased with the driver’s determination to gain every spot he could.
A report from Supercars.com reveals that Brookhouse, who joined Tickford in 2024, is proud of Randle’s competitiveness on track at Symmons Plains. Randle was racing for third at the time of the Feeney incident, and though the move cost them both quite a few positions, it highlights Randle’s focus on winning.
“I said we’d rather him be trying to win and trying to get as many points as he possibly can than sort of sitting back and not being aggressive,” said Brookhouse. “So he’ll learn from that. He’s devastated as you’d imagine. But he’s a good bloke and the reality of it is, is to admit it straight away, ‘I made a mistake and I’ve let the team down’, which is not the case.”
He added, “We’re all very happy with the fact he was going hard and trying to win a race.”
After the race, Randle approached the Triple Eight Race Engineering garage with intent to apologize to Feeney in person. He was stopped by Triple Eight Team Manager Mark Dutton, who physically pushed Randle away before he had the chance to speak with Feeney. Tickford is pursuing an investigation into the incident with Dutton, which the team argues was unsportsmanlike conduct when all Randle was trying to do was make amends.
“The guys are out there fighting tooth and nail for as many points as they can get,” Brookhouse said of the run-in. “So, sometimes things are going to boil over. I think everyone’s pretty cool about it all. There’s been a bit of banter between the two garages since, it’ll all be forgotten until they run into each other next time.”
