The tables have turned in the Australian Supercars Championship series. Last year, the Ford Mustang drivers were at a disadvantage compared to the Chevy Camaro racers, but now that the parity issues have been resolved, the pendulum is swinging back in the other direction. In fact, while the points lead is held down by a Chevy driver, he’s quite worried about the second-place Mustang GT of Chaz Mostert as the 2024 season reaches its peak.
Will Brown, driver of the No. 87 Camaro, explained his point of view in a report on Supercars.com. He’s hopeful that data gathered from a recent testing day will provide some insights as to why the Ford Mustang teams, particularly that of Mostert, have been so much better than the Camaros as of late.
“It was good to have a test day after Sydney and definitely gave us a few more tools for our toolbox, hopefully, we can take them to Tasmania and beat Chaz [Mostert],” Brown said.
Brown of Triple Eight Racing has held down the points lead since March, but Mostert has been slowly encroaching on his lead. In fact, the driver of the No. 25 Mustang has outperformed Brown over the last few races by 174 points. After the race at Darwin, Brown held a 279 point lead. Mostert has cut that down to just 105 points as the division heads to Tasmania on August 16th through 18th, 2024. Mostert is currently favored for the 2024 title, especially if things continue to swing in The Blue Oval’s direction.
Looking ahead, further testing could provide valuable insight for Ford and General Motors. An engine test in Detroit is scheduled for late August, which will be attended by Brown’s team, as well as Ford team, Dick Johnson Racing, in addition to representatives from Ford and Chevy themselves.
