The Continental remains one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history, one that endured for many years. The Continental Mark II, specifically, was a special machine given the fact that William Clay Ford Sr. oversaw its development personally with a goal of creating a vehicle that would represent the very best the world had to offer in terms of luxury. It wound up being the most expensive vehicle on sale when it launched for the 1956 model year – endearing it to some big-time celebrities – but this particular Continental Mark II is a bit more special than most.
This 1956 Continental Mark II – which is one of 2,550 produced in that particular model year – is up for auction at Bring a Trailer, but even more notably, it was reportedly fitted with a McCulloch supercharger when new. That blower has since been rebuilt, but it’s still attached to the factory 368 cubic-inch Y-Block V8, which features a Mallory distributor and coil and is mated to a three-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.
It’s unclear how many miles this Mark II has traveled in total, but the originally-Deep Green model has been repainted in another shade of green, though it remains in largely excellent condition, otherwise. The green leather interior is in great shape as well, and features amenities such as a cabin heater, an AM radio, a power-adjustable front bench seat, aircraft-style auxiliary controls, anodized dash trim, and electric front and rear windows.
There are many other notable mechanicals present here, such as temperature-sensitive front shock absorbers, power-assisted steering, and power-assisted drum brakes, making the Mark II more than a bit ahead of its time. Throw in a rather vintage supercharger, and it’s clear that this example is even more unique than the scant few that were built over just a couple of model years.
