Current President Joe Biden got off to a bit of a rocky start in his relationship with United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain as the union began its strike against Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors last year, but ultimately, the two sides were able to find common ground. It wasn’t long before Biden was on the picket line alongside Fain, carrying on a tradition of Democratic politicians supporting unions, in general. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the UAW has officially endorsed Biden’s replacement and current Vice President Kamala Harris as its pick for President.
The UAW International Executive Board has officially voted to endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States, citing her efforts in supporting the union back in 2019, when she was also present on the picket line alongside striking autoworkers. The union also announced that Harris will visit Detroit on August 7th and met with UAW members in person.
Of course, none of this comes as much of a surprise, particularly given the fact that the UAW previously endorsed Biden’s re-election campaign earlier this year, while also publicly panning his (and now Harris’) opponent in the Presidential race, Donald Trump. Trump has also directed his fair share of barbs at Fain as well.
“Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,” Fain said in a statement. “We stand at a crossroads in this country. We can put a billionaire back in office who stands against everything our union stands for, or we can elect Kamala Harris who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our war on corporate greed. This campaign is bringing together people from all walks of life, building a movement that can defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box. For our one million active and retired members, the choice is clear: We will elect Kamala Harris to be our next President this November.”
