Since its launch, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT has gone on to beat pretty much all of its competition in various comparison tests, even though its traditional rivals have been discontinued as of late. Thus, automotive publications are left to compare the S650 generation pony car to some more non-traditional sporty competitors – which recently included the Toyota GR Corolla, Honda Civic Type R, and Hyundai Elantra N.
That trio of unusual competitors was recently pitted against the 2024 Ford Mustang GT by the folks at Edmunds, which seems strange at first, but these are all sports cars that cost around $50,000 or less. For this comparison, Edmunds specifically looked at the kinds of things sports car buyers are likely to be interested in, including 0-60 mph acceleration, autocross, and basic old fashioned driving impressions.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT was the quickest of the bunch to reach 60 mph from a standstill at 4.8 seconds, followed by the GR Corolla at 5.4 seconds, the Civic Type R at 5.5 seconds, and the Elantra N at 6.0 seconds flat. The Mustang GT also finished second on the autocross with a best time of 38.42 seconds – behind the Civic Type R at 38.27 seconds – followed by the Elantra N at 38.66 seconds and the GR Corolla at 38.72 seconds.
Throw in driving impressions – which saw the Mustang finish third – the pony car tied for first place with the Civic Type R, but in the tiebreaker, our hosts note that its handling is lacking a bit and it’s pretty pricey – giving the Honda the edge. Regardless, it’s an impressive showing for the 2024 Ford Mustang GT, which has already beaten the 2024 Lotus Emira, 2023 Toyota GR Supra, 2023 BMW M2, Chevy Camaro SS, and Dodge SRT Challenger Scat Pack Wide Body Shakedown Last Call in some other comparison tests.

I just hope the lack of competition doesn’t hinder future versions.
