The all-new, fully redesigned 2024 Lincoln Nautilus has been nothing short of a massive hit among consumers and critics alike since it first launched a few months ago, and it has helped attract a new, younger customer to the brand as well, thanks largely to its cutting-edge tech. Now in the running for 2025 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, the new Lincoln Nautilus also recently defeated a notable rival in a comparison test, too.
That rival is the Lexus RX450h+, which MotorTrend just pitted against the Lincoln Nautilus in an interesting yet somewhat unconventional comparison test. We say this because the Nautilus in this test is equipped with a standard hybrid powertrain, while the RX450h+ is the plug-in variant of that particular crossover. Regardless, the RX has long set the standard in the mid-size luxury utility segment, and just received its own redesign for the 2023 model year.
Regardless, the new Lincoln Nautilus contains substantially more screen inside the cabin – thanks to its coast-to-coast setup – when compared to the RX’s more conventional layout, along with easier-to-use controls, according to MT. The Nautilus is also larger and offers up 5.6 cubic feet more standard cargo space than the RX, though the Lexus does have something the Lincoln doesn’t – 37 miles of all-electric driving range.
With pricing proving to be quite similar, depending on spec and options, the Lincoln Nautilus took home the win here thanks to its upscale, tech-laden cabin and cushy ride, even though it has less power and poorer fuel economy when compared to the Lexus RX450h+. In doing so, it joins a host of other Blue Oval models that critics have ranked ahead of rivals as of late, including the Ranger beating the Toyota Tacoma, the Ford Bronco taking down the Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler, and the the Mustang GT defeating a variety of non-traditional foes.
“Empirical data suggests the Lexus is dynamically better, but that diminishes what this class is about,” MT says of its decision. “Midsize SUVs should be practical, but luxury models should also be premium and pampering. Unfortunately, the Lexus RX450h+ plus doesn’t break any new ground in this realm. Driving one doesn’t leave much of an impression, and it comes up short in cabin space and value.”
“The 2024 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid Black Label does a superior job at imparting a high-level premium experience. It is remarkably upscale, bringing Navigator levels of plushness and ambience to the midsize SUV segment. Through selectable aromas, audio system quality, massaging seats, BlueCruise, and more, it does an outstanding job at its singular focus – stress reduction. The Nautilus Hybrid isn’t the quickest vehicle to get from point A to point B; instead, it’s a extremely sumptuous and well-executed luxury SUV, and the best choice to if you’re looking to live live the very, very good life.”
