2025.5 Volvo XC90 Debuts As Updated Lincoln Aviator Rival

The 2025 Lincoln Aviator debuted back in early February after undergoing a mid-cycle refresh that gave the luxurious crossover a mild exterior restyling, along with a pared-down powertrain lineup, the addition of BlueCruise, and a new, larger 13.2-inch infotainment screen running the brand new Lincoln Digital Experience software. Precisely one month ago, the refreshed Aviator began shipping to dealers, but it’ll also now be doing battle with another updated rival – the 2025.5 Volvo XC90.

Long a popular choice in its segment, the Volvo XC90 hasn’t received a full-blown redesign in a decade – and this mid-year refresh doesn’t change that. However, the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 does get a host of updates designed to keep it competitive in a heated space, including a fresh look on the outside with slimmer and wider headlights, a new grille design, revised bumpers at both ends, and a new hood. As is usually the case, there’s also a new exterior color available – 739 Mulberry Red – and new wheel designs in 20-, 21-, and 22-inch diameters.

The interior of the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 has also been treated to a variety of updates with a flatter dash that bears more textured materials than before, a new center console, a relocated wireless charging pad, and a larger 11.2 inch-inch center infotainment screen that’s faster than the outgoing 9-inch unit, as well as stuffed with more pixels and running Google software. Along with some new chrome trim, Volvo also added improved insulation to cut down on road noise as well.

In terms of mechanicals, the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 only gets minor changes, including the addition of standard Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) and a new combustion cycle for hybrid models. In terms of powertrains, customers have three to choose from – a turbocharged 2.0L with a 48-volt electric motor for hybrids that generates 247 horsepower in the B6 or 295 in the B6, or the PHEV T8 that pairs that powerplant with a 14.7 kWh battery pack, giving it 33 miles of all-electric driving range and 455 horsepower with 523 pound-feet of torque. All three options come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard.

Pricing for the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 starts out at $59,745, though the company hasn’t yet revealed what higher trims will cost. Regardless, deliveries are expected to begin in Q1 2025.
