The folks behind the YouTube Channel Donut Media have long been known to churn out some pretty cool projects, with the latest being of the Blue Oval persuasion – a cheap, beaten-up, $500 Ford Ranger that they purchased and dropped $100k into to make it a proper desert racer. Now that their Ranger project is completed, it’s time to take on a new endeavor, and that’s precisely the case – this time, with a pair of very different Ford Mustang builds.
For this project, Donut has purchased two S550-generation Ford Mustang models with the idea that one will be a cheap build, and the other will be expensive. Once both are finished, they’ll square off in a drag race to see if money actually makes a difference here, which should prove to be quite interesting for anyone considering a similar type of project, yet, may not have a ton of dough to sink into it. For the cheap build, Donut has set a budget of $10,000, while the other build has an unlimited budget.
While common sense would say that the pricey build will likely be faster, the more general goal here is to figure out which kinds of upgrades are worth the money, and which ones aren’t – useful information for those considering tackling a similar project. Before that process begins, Donut takes both Ford Mustang models to the drag strip for some baseline runs, and manages to hit its goal of running an 8.5-second eighth-mile – even coming in slightly under that mark, in fact.
Ultimately, the best run of the day was an 8.435-second pass for the “high dollar” Ford Mustang, followed by 8.459 for the budget build, so they’re pretty close right out of the box. Now, both cars are set to go under the knife – and get some better tires than these all-seasons – with the goal of shaving serious time off those runs.
