It took some time for The Blue Oval to gain momentum in the Xfinity Series in 2024, but now that the manufacturer has found its stride, it seems unstoppable. Leading the charge is Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse. He’s fresh off a win at Bristol last weekend – where he was also crowned regular season champion. With the Playoffs officially underway, Custer has his sights set on the ultimate prize: winning his second consecutive Xfinity title.
According to a report from NASCAR.com, Custer says he’s ready and confident that he can go back-to-back in the Xfinity Series championship. He slashed a 43-point gap to Justin Allgaier, driver of the No. 7 Chevy Camaro SS, who led the championship heading into the final regular season race at Bristol. Custer’s performance and Allgaier’s misfortune helped boost Custer to the top spot in points.
But Custer says he’s ill at ease when he thinks about the rest of the season. Nothing’s set in stone, and the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster for his No. 00 NASCAR Ford team.
“We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing,” Custer said. “And at the same time, just trying to stay clean. I feel like we’ve had really fast cars that can go run up front every weekend. We’ve just had a lot of stupid stuff happen the last month and a half. So Bristol was a race where we turned that all around, was able to have a really fast car and get a win. So hopefully, we can take that into the Playoffs and have a good first round.”
If Custer can keep his nose clean and keep gaining decent finishes in the No. 00 Mustang, the 2023 Xfinity Series champion should be able to pull off a second consecutive title in the division. It would be the perfect send-off for Custer, who will leave the Xfinity Series to rejoin the Cup Series field in 2025 as part of the newly formed Haas Factory Team.
