Reigning Australian Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki recently announced plans to drive a Supercars Ford Mustang GT for Dick Johnson Racing (DJR) full-time beginning in 2025. His new venture marks the end of a long relationship with General Motors and Erebus Motorsport, where Kostecki most recently drove a Chevy Camaro race car, but his current (soon-to-be-former) team has been nothing but supportive toward him for the next step in his career.
A report from Supercars.com reveals that Kostecki doesn’t feel that there’s any “bad blood” between himself and his former race team. In fact, Erebus CEO, Barry Ryan, was present during the announcement alongside DJR co-owners Dick Johnson and Ryan Story, as well as CEO David Noble.
“The relationship is fine,” Kostecki said of Erebus. “There’s no secret that I went through some issues, but it’s great to be able to finish this season, and to get advice from Barry who gave me my first opportunity, and Betty [Klimenko] as well was fantastic. They’ve been very supportive of me, Betty really wants another Bathurst trophy so I’ll do my best to try and deliver.”
Even so, Kostecki isn’t looking too far ahead, and is still focused on winning with Erebus for the remainder of the 2024 racing season.
“For me it’s just business as usual. It’s great to get this announcement out today but my eyes are solely on the Sandown 500 coming up soon,” Kostecki said. “It’s exciting to be partnering up with Todd Hazelwood for the enduro season, and we’ve got plenty of races left with my current team at Erebus. There’s no better way I’d love to send it off than with some more trophies.”
While Kostecki has partnered with GM-backed teams for most of his career, he did drive a Ford race car in the 2017 Super2 Series season.
