Ford Explored Mustang Sedan With S197 Mustang Design Study: Exclusive

The concept of a four-door Ford Mustang is certainly nothing new, as The Blue Oval itself explored such a machine way back in the 1960s – before the pony car even launched. However, six decades later, we still haven’t seen an actual production Mustang sedan surface, though over the past few weeks, quite a few rumors have surfaced indicating that it’s only a matter of time before we might. In the meantime, some fresh news pertaining to a fairly recent development in this story have surfaced.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Ford actually created a design study of a four-door Mustang sedan based on the S197  generation model some time ago. The automaker even went so far as to create a full-scale model of this Mustang sedan around 2005, though unfortunately, photos of that model are unavailable, and like all design studies, this was an internal concept that was never shown to the public. However, the fact that Ford went so far as to create a design study for a four-door pony car proves that at least some within the walls of The Blue Oval were receptive to such a machine at that time.

This news takes on extra importance given the fact that in a recent interview conducted just this past May, Ford CEO Jim Farley admitted that a Mustang sedan was at least a possibility. “We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang,” Farley said. “For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we do other Mustang body forms – a four-door or whatever? I believe we could, as long as these models have all the performance and attitude of the original.”

Then, roughly one month ago, a report surfaced claiming that Ford held a meeting with its dealer network recently, during which attendees were shown renderings, mockups, and photos of some future Ford Mustang variants, which included a four-door coupe reportedly called the Mach 4, as well as a lifted, off-road, Baja-style model with rugged tires, an RTR-modified Mustang EcoBoost with a $40k price tag, and a high-performance, V8-powered convertible that looked a lot like the older Shelby GT350/GT500 variants, albeit, sans any Shelby badging.

However, Ford didn’t provide any sort of timeline for these potential Mustang variants, nor were they confirmed for the future – though dealers in attendance reportedly left with the belief that The Blue Oval is seriously considering putting those variants into production.

  • These marketing folks without any passion for the auto industry need to be ignored. Make a great sedan, just don't call it a Mustang. Make the Mach E Karenmobile, just don't call it a Mustang. It isn't difficult.

    • They have a Mustang station wagon from the 60s. Look Dodge had a 4 door Charger which was never ever a 4 door. It sold like hot cakes. Ford is doing the right thing. There were 4 door Mustangs built in the 80s that were Custom. They looked great.

  • Build a performance Lincoln sedan off the MKZ platform with the 3.0 motor, not a weird Mustang. Lincoln is all about SUV's now :-(

  • Enough of the 4 door Mustang and boxy SUVs. Find some actual designers that can design exciting looking sedans. These SUVs have gotten so boring and overpriced.

    • SUVs are top sellers in the United States. Sedans don't sell. Toyota is talking about getting rid of there Sedans. KIA is also talking about it. Have to make money and SUVs are making loads of money. Sedans are done again by 71%. Sedans sell higher in other countries.

  • Ford is doing a great thing by building a 4 Door Mustang. I have seen 60s and 80s custom Mustang Sedans. Look great. 60s they did have an off site that built Station Wagon Mustangs. Seen those in the 80s as well. Ford knows what sells not you people in the comments. Mustang Mach E I thought it wouldn't sell. But it's out sold Teslas lot since it came out. So you have to sell what the Consumers what. If you don't you go bankrupt and lose your business. Ford is top dog and now GM is finally back up there since Ford has been helping GM. Like any other Merchandise out here. If it sells keep it. If your Merchandise doesn't sell need to stop making it and sell what demands by Consumers. Why do you think Toys R US went out of business. Grandpa Pigeons and so on went out of business. Have to get with times. 4 Door charge sold crazy and it again was never a 4 Door. ALWAYS been a 2 Door.
