The European Ford Explorer EV entered mass production at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Germany this past June, and is already racking up awards – most recently, securing a 2024 Red Dot Design Award, which is one of the largest design competitions in the world. Now, the Ford Explorer EV has been awarded yet another notable accolade, but this time, it’s one that’s related to the crossover’s inherent safety.
That award is a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program), which is a voluntary vehicle safety rating system similar to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. The Euro NCAP conducts crash testing on new vehicles and then awards “star ratings” based on the performance of the vehicles. As part of the latest round of testing, the Ford Explorer EV earned the highest possible rating in that regard, which is quite impressive.
The Ford Explorer EV earned scores of 89 percent for adult occupants, 86 percent for child occupants, 80 percent for vulnerable road users, and 72 percent for its safety assist systems, aided largely by its bevy of standard safety equipment. In crash testing, the passenger compartment remained stable and provided adequate protection – save for the lower leg of the driver – and the crossover also helped protect pedestrians and cyclists, even scoring the maximum number of points in terms of head, knee, and tibia injuries.
In terms of the performance of its various safety systems, the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performance adequately in terms of reacting to the presence of other vehicles, and the Ford Explorer EV avoided collisions with them in most scenarios during testing. Euro NCAP also praised the crossover’s standard seatbelt reminder system, driver status monitoring system, lane support system, and Adaptive Cruise Control, all of which performed well during its various stages of testing.
