The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents in recent years exploring different types of possible storage and cargo management systems for its future models, most of which revolve around retail vehicles like pickups. Nearly two years ago, the automaker also published a patent presenting us with an idea for a vehicle-based package delivery system that could complete that task in an efficient manner with no human interaction required. Now, this newly published patent somewhat combines those ideas with a new one – this time, for a package management system that may be used in future Ford vehicles.
With more and more people ordering items online and having them shipped to their homes or businesses, Ford is aiming to improve the delivery of those e-commerce items in various ways. Delivery companies are facing quite a few challenges amid this boom in growth as well, many of which Ford aims to rectify with this new system.
If this patent comes to fruition, future Ford vehicles may utilize an innovative setup complete with multiple shelves and areas for different kinds of containers that could hold packages. The vehicle would also be capable of storing information about those packages and keep track of their location as well as where it’s set to be delivered, all while making it easy for delivery personnel to locate it and track the package in real-time. It’s an interesting concept for certain, and given the boom in e-commerce these days, also seemingly likely to become a reality.
