Lincoln Rival Volvo Pushes Back EV Timetable

It wasn’t too terribly long ago that most automakers announced ambitious electrification plans, with many setting goals of going all-electric across their respective lineups in the coming years. One of those brands was Lincoln rival Volvo, which previously expected to sell nothing but EVs by 2030, rolling out a host of new models in between now and then. Problem is, consumer demand for EVs has lagged behind expected levels of growth as of late, prompting many automotive companies to alter those plans – a list that now includes Volvo.

Volvo has announced that it no longer plans to go fully electric by 2030, and will instead continue to sell hybrids past that date. Roughly 90-100 percent of the company’s lineup will consist of EVs or plug-in hybrids by 2030, with the other 10 percent perhaps going to mild hybrids. Volvo also stated that PHEVs are now a big part of its future plans, and that it will redesign the XC90 as a result of this revamped strategy.

Regardless, Volvo is just the latest automotive brand to announce a shift away from pure electrification and more toward hybrids, a list that includes a pair of its rivals in both Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz. Ford’s luxury arm was previously expected to add a number of EVs to its lineup in the coming years, but recently, President Dianne Craig admitted that it’s no longer focused on all-electric vehicles, and instead plans to offer what customers are seeking.

In addition to ditching its EV dealer sales program – just like Ford – Lincoln will also be adding two new models to its lineup in the near future, though it’s unclear what types of powertrains those vehicles will bear, nor if they’ll be new or based on existing vehicles in the lineup. What we do know is that Ford recently canceled plans to build two all-electric three-row crossovers – believed to be based on the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator – and will instead offer two new hybrids.
