Tickford Racing has unveiled a special livery for the No. 55 Supercars Ford Mustang GT of Thomas Randle. The livery will be on track just once at the forthcoming Sandown 500, although it’s not the first time this particular paint scheme has decorated a Ford race car.
The No. 55 Mustang, which will be tag-teamed by Randle and codriver Tyler Everingham, will feature a special Castrol livery at Sandown. The paint scheme was first made famous by the Castrol TOM’s Toyota Supra in the Japan Super GT Series in the 1990s, and has been featured on race cars competing in the World Rally Championship, touring cars, and sportscars. Notably, it became popular as a livery that was included in the Gran Turismo PlayStation video games.
Brad Keselowski of NASCAR raced with the same paint scheme on his Ford Mustang Dark Horse earlier this year, bringing the colors to Victory Lane at Darlington. The Castrom MEM Rally Team ran the same livery in the British Rally Championship and also won. Randle hopes he can keep the legacy alive and bring the special Castrol colors back to Victory Lane in Melbourne this weekend.
“We are super proud to be unveiling this classic Castrol livery on our Ford Mustang for the Sandown 500 this weekend,” Randle said in a team release. “This year marks 125 years of Castrol globally, so we thought it fitting to run one of the most famous Castrol liveries of all time. Like many, I have fond memories of playing Gran Turismo on PlayStation, and the Castrol TOM’s livery is one of the first that comes to mind.”
He added, “The design looked fantastic on Brad Keselowski’s Ford Mustang NASCAR this year, and I reckon it looks just as good on the Tickford Mustang Supercar. Hopefully, Tyler and I can replicate his race-winning performance for Castrol and the Tickford fans.”
Jan Willink, Brand and Product Manager, Castrol Australia and New Zealand, weighed in as well. He said, “Castrol is proud to continue its 125-year celebrations with a timeless livery that celebrates Castrol’s sustained involvement and success in motorsport globally. Whether fans of motorsport, gaming, or both, the Castrol TOM’s livery is instantly recognizable across generations.”
The 2024 Sandown 500 is scheduled for September 13th through 15th.
