1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra In Mystic Up For Auction

Most Ford Mustang fans are well aware by now that the beloved pony car has been offered in some pretty cool exterior colors over its six decades of existence – including the famed color-shifting hues known as Mystic Metallic and Mystichrome. This super cool paint took BASF three years to develop, and depicts shades of purple, green, teal, gold, and copper, depending on the lighting and the angle at which one views it. Over the years these paints colors were offered, not many Ford Mustang models were sold in those shades, which makes machines like this 1996 SVT Cobra quite desirable.

This 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra is currently up for auction at Bring a Trailer as just one of 2,000 examples that left the factory finished in Mystic Clearcoat Metallic for this particular model year, and it has just 27k miles showing on the odometer, too. It lived its entire life in New Jersey before being acquired by the selling dealer earlier this year, and now, the Cobra is up for grabs in stellar condition – with just a couple of blemishes marring its pricey and exotic paint.

Inside the cabin, there is a bit of bolster wear on the driver’s side black leather seat, but otherwise, it’s a pretty clean cabin with amenities including a power-adjustable driver seat, air conditioning, power windows, and the CD/cassette Mach 460 sound system. Power comes from Ford’s naturally-aspirated 4.6L V8, which in this guise was originally rated to send 305 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via a Borg-Warner T45 five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential with 3.27 gears.

In the past, we’ve seen previous few Mystic Ford Mustang SVT Cobra models surface for sale, including a pair of 1996 examples – one with just seven original miles, and another with just over 18k miles. However, as we’ve seen in the past, it’s quite difficult and pricey to respray this particular color, which is undoubtedly a consideration for anyone thinking about buying the cool, color-shifting pony car.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
