When the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD was revealed some time ago, The Blue Oval was very much up front about one singular goal it has in mind for the fastest road-going pony car ever – to become the first American automotive manufacturer to build and sell a car that can lap Germany’s iconic Nurburgring in less than seven minutes. We first spotted the Ford Mustang GTD at the track famously known as “Green Hell” back in June, though earlier this month, poor weather and track conditions put an early end to the latest attempt at a blazingly fast lap time. However, FoMoCo has now given us an update on this particular endeavor.
The Blue Oval is currently documenting its attempt at doing something only a tiny handful of cars have done over the years in a film called “Road to the Ring,” which will outline all of the many challenges the automaker has faced and overcome during this process. It just gave us a teaser for the film, but added that the full feature will be released “later this month,” which means that we’ll know the results of that mission very soon.
Though it’s incredibly expensive and reserved mostly for the rich, famous, and influential folks out there, the Ford Mustang GTD is still an impressive machine chock full of race car-derived tech that help make it the fastest production pony car in history. Its supercharged 5.2L V8 cranks out 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, which enables the GTD to reach a top speed of 202 miles-per-hour, and it utilizes a dry sump oiling system to keep that powerplant lubricated under extreme cornering, too.
The extreme aero present on (and under) the Ford Mustang GTD plays a big role in its ability to lap tracks in eye-opening times, too, though it limits top speed a bit. Regardless, the GTD also features a trick Drag Reduction System that can change the angle of the giant rear wing and activate flaps underneath the front of the car to provide a better balance between speed and grip.
