From the moment that the all-new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD was revealed, The Blue Oval was very clear about what the new, ultimate pony car was designed to do – be wicked fast around the track. This is a purpose-built machine, after all, one that harnesses loads of race car tech ranging from a transaxle to a massively supercharged V8 and some truly impressive aerodynamic features. The Ford Mustang GTD team has also set its sights on lapping Germany’s famous Nurburgring in under seven minutes – a mark that only a few vehicles have achieved – and a recent teaser seems to indicate that the automaker may have already hit that mark.
Earlier this week, Ford teased a new feature film dubbed “Road to the Ring,” which is set to debut later this month and give us a behind the scenes look at its quest to crack the seven minute barrier at the iconic circuit. In that teaser, the automaker noted that achieving that goal in the Ford Mustang GTD would “fulfill a promise made by Ford president and CEO Jim Farley when the vehicle debuted in 2023 – beating the best European automakers on their turf. Only a handful of cars from Porsche and Mercedes-AMG have ever achieved sub-seven-minute lap – and soon, a Mustang could stand among them.”
Ford also called the sub-seven minute lap time at the Nurburgring the “gold standard” for sports car development these days, all of which certainly seems to indicate that the automaker is either quite confident in the fact that the Mustang GTD can get there, or perhaps already has – which seems even more likely given the fact that The Blue Oval has gone to the trouble of making an entire film documenting this process. On top of that, Farley recently stated that the Mustang is more than capable of “disrupting” higher-end sports cars like the Porsche 911.
What we do know for sure is that the Ford Mustang GTD is already the fastest production pony car in history, as its supercharged 5.2L V8 uses its 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque – plus extreme aero and even a Drag Reduction System – to reach a top speed of 202 miles-per-hour. Now, we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to see just how quick it is around one of the most famous tracks on the planet.

If they could only produce a quality super duty. My 2024 F450 is a major disappointment.
I hope they achieve it!
