Ford EV Tesla NACS Adapter Issues Limited To Recent Batch

As Ford Authority reported last week, The Blue Oval sent a notice to EV owners asking them to stop using their Tesla NACS adapter immediately, though it didn’t provide an exact reason why, outside of an unknown “problem” it had discovered with the unit. Ford noted that the adapter may result in reduced charging speeds over time, and in some cases, charge port damage, but added that it would be sending customers a suitable replacement. Now, we’re learning some additional details about this particular issue.

According to InsideEVs, a Ford spokesperson confirmed that a specific batch of NACS adapters are to blame here, but the automaker considers this to be a customer service action – not a full-blown recall. Additionally, officials from both General Motors and Rivian have confirmed that they are not experiencing these issues with the NACS adapters provided to their customers. “Rivian is not affected by this issue, and Rivian drivers may continue to use their NACS adapters normally at this time,” a spokesperson said.

“Ford identified a potential issue with a batch of adapters sent earlier in the year where over time, continued usage may result in reduced charging speeds. Ford does not recommend using the identified adapter,” the automaker said in a statement. “Ford will begin shipping replacement adapters the week of October 28th. Notified retail customers are being asked to review the current address in their FordPass account. If it’s correct, no action is required. If it needs to be updated, customers will be asked to do so by October 24th. Fleet customers will be notified and asked to confirm their address directly with their National Account Manager.”

Shortly after it signed a deal granting Ford EV owners access to the Tesla Supercharger network, The Blue Oval announced that those same owners would be able to secure this free adapter that enables its Combined Charging Standard (CCS) equipped vehicles to utilize that company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers, at least, for a limited time. Deliveries of the Ford EV adapter have been delayed a few times due to an unnamed supplier constraint, but Ford has also extended the deadline for owners to sign up to receive a free adapter multiple times as a result.

  2. For those that have a charger and are now getting a replacement due to this, I say they get to the back of the line while the rest of us who have been waiting 6+ months for their first one can get a taste of Tesla charging.
