We originally learned that the Ford F-150 Lightning was set to gain Apple Maps EV Routing functionality back in September 2023, and just a few weeks later, that feature was indeed added to the all-electric pickup. Then, last December, Blue Oval CEO Jim Farley hinted that the automaker’s EVs would also soon gain Google Maps EV Route Planning as well, though Android users and Ford EV owners have been waiting for that feature to arrive ever since. Now, it seems as if Google Maps EV Route Planning is starting to roll out, however.
This news comes to us from Ford product manager Anthony Phillips, who recently posted some details about this rollout on LinkedIn. Phillips revealed that EV routing for Google Maps through Android Auto has already begun arriving in Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E models, coupled with a few other updates. Those include the ability for EV owners to view their estimated battery level upon arrival at a destination, along with suggested charging stops along a trip, and an estimate of how long it will take to charge the vehicle once it arrives.
Additionally, this new update will enable Android Auto users to view Tesla Supercharger stations they can utilize with an adapter on Google Maps, coupled with info pertaining to battery preconditioning and a list of available chargers along a route. The goal here was to provide Android customers the ability to utilize an end-to-end charging experience via Google Maps. To take advantage, Ford F-150 Lightning and Mach-E owners will need to first download FoMoCo’s software update, along with the latest version of Google Maps on their smartphones.
Ford first announced the details of this update back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and then revealed some additional details a few days later. In February, we learned that the new update would enable users to view Plug and Charge EV stations along a specific route as well, which should come in handy for Android users who also own one of these two Ford EVs.
