Ford Maverick, Bronco Sport Prices Could Balloon Under Trump

The subject of tariffs has been a hot one in the automotive sector as of late, with much of the debate surrounding higher fees on imported vehicles and raw materials focused on China. Both the current Biden Administration and former President Trump – who is running against Vice President Kamala Harris in the U.S. election set for next month – have supported such actions, but now, it seems as if Trump is also eyeing imported vehicles from Mexico in terms of adding tariffs, too.

“We’ll put a tariff of 200 percent on if we have to,” Trump said of Mexican vehicle imports, according to Reuters. “We’re not going to let it happen. We’re not letting those cars come into the United States.” Previously, Trump stated that if elected, he would impose a 100 percent tariff on imported vehicles, which is part of his plan to help bolster the U.S. automotive industry. However, as is the case with tariffs in general, the implementation of these duties would likely raise the prices of several vehicles, including the Ford Maverick, Ford Bronco Sport, and Ford Mustang Mach-E, all of which are currently produced in Mexico.

Trump has also spoken out on numerous occasions regarding all-electric vehicles, noting that they could “spell the death of the U.S. auto industry” in general, and added that he would roll back EV mandates if he wins the upcoming election.

Back in 2018, Ford went so far as to cancel plans to import the Focus Active into the U.S. from China amid Trump’s proposed tariffs at that time. Soon, we may see something similar with the Lincoln Nautilus and other models built in China and exported to the U.S. too, as those models may be banned from America altogether, if a proposed rule from the U.S. Commerce Department becomes a reality. In the meantime, steep tariff hikes on imported Chinese vehicles and raw materials imposed by the Biden Administration just took effect in late September.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. And they wouldn’t sell. One unit.

    1. Agreed, and imagine if the production that has been wasted on EV production by Ford in the USA had been Maverick an Bronco Sport production instead. Ford would have been profitable, not about broke financially. Then we could talk about bringing back Fusion and Focus vehicles and they too being affordable. We were looking at the ’24 Ford Escape to replace a ’09 Ford Escape, the cost as well as the issues concerning reliability caused us to look elsewhere outside of Ford.

  4. I have no problem with moving manufacturing back to the USA! Mexico is not our friend. Why should we provide jobs to a Country that doesn’t support us. Manufacturers and unions will sooner or later figure out how to build here at reasonable prices. They have this option or an option to go out of business. There’s a reconning coming in the car industry. China is just waiting on the election results. There are going to be a lot of auto workers wondering what happened.

  6. The Maverick 2025 is so cheap and ugly that even the Maverick covers uts in eyes….
They should fire the one who came up with this terrible design and tho one who approved it. I’m glad I got mine 3 years early that looks as it was intended, as the little brother of the F150

  7. It’s not a secret, to build cheaper (cost wise) vehicles they have to get out from under the UAW. So in effect the tariffs could create US jobs.

  8. No tariffs if they are built in the US. However, the automakers will not build them in the US unless the UAW (and management) get a clue about pricing themselves out of existence.

  10. A cheaper built cost wise vehicle and I guess you just throwing safety out the window as you drive 80mph down the freeway. Should they leave the seat belts off too?
So you want to cut a happy worker under UAW, as oppose to someone making $5.00 an hr. spending his shift on watching the clock to get off.

  15. It’s a simple solution, the UAW Labor Union has got to back off with all the demands that drive up the cost of ANY vehicle. And secondly, Ford as well as others has got to tell the government that the EV madness has got to stop. Imagine the sheer number of Mavericks an Bronco Sport vehicles that could have been made in the USA.
