The Ford Mustang Dark Horse R is just one of many pony car racers based on the new S650 generation model, and it’s positioned as a bridge between the road-legal Dark Horse and the GT3 and GT4 racers. Thus far, the Ford Mustang Dark Horse R has only been seen in action as part of the new one-make Mustang Challenge series, which just debuted this past August, but now, those that own one of these machines also have the chance to race them in a very special venue next season.

That venue is Le Mans, as Ford Mustang Dark Horse R owners are now eligible to sign up for the chance to participate in a non-points round of the Mustang Challenge during the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2025 as part of next season’s list of events. Officially called the Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational, this event is open to any team or owner with a Dark Horse R, though drivers must have a national license issued by IMSA, INDYCAR, NASCAR, NHRA, SCCA, or USAC. The national ASN of USA, ACCUS, will issue a letter of no objection in order to compete. Those located outside of the U.S. must have an FIA International License D or higher to participate, with a permanent authorization to participate in national competitions of other ASNs, or a letter of authorization from their local FIA recognized ASN.
From there, the Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational is split into two categories, starting with IMSA Mustang Challenge Competitor Le Mans event entries for those that have entered the 2024 or 2025 IMSA Mustang Challenge, or Single Le Mans event entries, which is for those that didn’t participate in the Mustang Challenge in 2024 and haven’t signed up for the 2025 season yet. The Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational will consist of five sessions on track, each 45 minutes in length – with two practices, one qualifying event, and two races. Those interested in participating can register their interest by heading over here.
