Ford Tells EV Owners To Stop Using Tesla NACS Adapters

Shortly after it signed a deal granting Ford EV owners access to the Tesla Supercharger network, The Blue Oval announced that those same owners would be able to secure a free adapter that enables its Combined Charging Standard (CCS) equipped vehicles to utilize that company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers, at least, for a limited time. Since then, Ford has had some trouble getting those adapters to customers amid supply chain shortages, and now, it’s asking owners to stop using them altogether after discovering a bit of a problem.

As first reported by InsideEVs, Ford issued a bulletin today asking owners to stop using their Tesla NACS adapter immediately, though it didn’t provide an exact reason why, outside of an unknown “problem” it has discovered with the unit. “As a part of ongoing testing, your adapter has been identified by Ford to have a potential issue that may result in reduced charging speeds over time, and in some cases, charge port damage. As such, Ford does not recommend using the adapter initially supplied to you with any vehicle from this time on, and we will be sending you a replacement,” the automaker stated.

“Ford will supply a replacement adapter in the coming weeks and provide return instructions to send back your existing adapter – both at no cost. It is imperative that we receive all adapters affected to reduce the risk of potential vehicle damage.”

It’s unclear if this unknown problem affects other NACS adapters utilized by automakers other than Ford, but this is just the latest issue facing that particular part. In fact, deliveries of the free Ford EV adapter have been delayed multiple times to date due to an unnamed “supplier constraint.” However, Ford has also extended the deadline for owners to sign up to receive a free adapter multiple times as a result, and may likely be prompted to do so yet again amid this new problem.
