Joey Logano fought hard on the Charlotte Roval on October 13th, 2024, putting his No. 22 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse across the line in eighth place. At the time that the checkered flag waved, it looked like Logano would have to abandon his hopes of becoming a three-time Cup Series champion as he was ousted from the Playoffs, but then, the No. 48 Chevy Camaro ZL1 of Alex Bowman was disqualified after postrace inspection, removing Bowman from the Round of 8 and putting Logano in. That’s not to say, however, that Logano didn’t work hard at the Roval to dodge elimination. In fact, if he hadn’t done as well as he did, he might not have made it at all.
A report from NASCAR.com details Logano’s battle on the Roval. When the race ended, he was four points below the cutline, leaving him out of the title fight until Bowman was disqualified. Even so, Logano isn’t taking the circumstance for granted, and he’s proud of the run that put his No. 22 NASCAR Ford back in position.
“I mean, there’s a lot to be proud of,” Logano said moments after the race. “You know, we came here with our back up against the wall needing to score a lot of points. And you think about the stages and then cycling yourself into kind of a tough spot. No matter how you call the race, you put yourself in a spot where you’re going to be at a disadvantage on tires or be way back in the pack. We were at one point, and I was able to kind of manage and I think we’re what second and third in the stages. So we did good with that.”
Despite a lackluster Round of 12, though, Logano said that he didn’t really have any doubt that his No. 22 NASCAR Ford team would have a run at the championship again. Interestingly, he’s qualified for the Championship 4 in every even-numbered calendar year since 2014.
“We’re a championship-winning team,” he said. “It’s just, you know, we didn’t have a good round.”
