The 2024 Australian Supercars Championship is drawing to a close, and a pair of Supercars Ford drivers are pursuing a pair of Chevy Camaro racers for the overall title. They’re not throwing in the towel yet by any means, and in fact, there are a few scenarios that could put a Ford Mustang GT on top in points.
A report from Supercars.com outlines how the Supercars Ford drivers can pull off an upset at Gold Coast this weekend. Currently, the No. 87 Camaro of Will Brown and the No. 88 Camaro of Broc Feeney hold down first and second in the points contest, leading the No. 25 Mustang of Chaz Mostert and the No. 6 Mustang of Cam Waters. With any luck, one of them could land in Victory lane and accrue enough points to dethrone their rivals.
Both Feeney and Brown race under the Red Bull Ampol Racing banner, and if they find trouble at Gold Coast, the Supercars Ford drivers could capitalize on it. Mostert is currently 225 points behind Brown after a rough few races that saw him slot in behind Feeney in points. But Mostert is one to watch at Gold Coast with two victories under his belt at the track.
Waters has also had good luck at Gold Coast, with two top-10 finishes to his name in the 2022 season. He followed those results with a victory and a podium finish in 2023, putting him in good position to win this weekend. Waters is 464 points back from Brown, and he’ll need to pull off an incredible race this weekend if he wants to close that gap.
However, if Waters is unable to cut his deficit to under 300 points, he’ll be mathematically eliminated from the championship before the final round of the 2024 season.
The 2024 Gold Coast 500 is scheduled for October 25th through October 28th, 2024. Festivities begins with a pair of 40-minute practice sessions on Friday.
