New USPS Mail Carrier Uses Ford Steering Wheel, Cluster

Ever since Oshkosh Defense debuted the all-new, Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) that will replace the ages-old Grumman Long Life Vehicle (LLV) in the United States Postal Service (USPS) fleet, we’ve known that this new mail carrier was slated to utilize a number of Ford-sourced components. That includes the NGDV’s 2.0L I-4 powerplant, along with transmissions, suspension parts, and various other bits and pieces that were largely unknown, at least until now, as some new photos show off a few more Blue Oval parts present in the all-new delivery vehicle.

These photos surfaced on Reddit recently, showing off a new NGDV model that just arrived in Georgia. While we’ve already seen the outside of the new USPS mail carrier on several occasions by now, this is our very first look at the interior of the NGDV, which contains a handful of Ford parts that we can spot. Those include the same steering wheel present in models like the Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, and Ford Maverick, along with the familiar rotary dial shifter, windshield wiper stalk, and turn signal stalk. Additionally, the instrument cluster looks just like the one present in a number of vehicles such as the Maverick and Escape, too.

Though it has been criticized for its unusual exterior appearance, the NGDV has already been winning over mail carriers, who appreciate the fact that they can actually stand up in the cargo area thanks to that comically large roofline. The NGDV is also equipped with modern amenities the LLV lacked – things like air conditioning, airbags, 360-degree cameras, blind-spot monitoring, collision sensors, and anti-lock brakes.

For now at least, most of the NGDV models hitting USPS locations utilize the aforementioned Ford 2.0L I-4 gas engine, though eventually, the Post Office plans to transition to an all-electric lineup, with a goal of reaching a 75 percent electrified mix by 2026. To help bridge that gap, USPS also recently purchased a substantial 9,000 all-electric Ford E-Transit vans from the automaker, too.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

It’s an ugly business, delivering all that junk mail and political flyers.

Because ford had a hand in the design.

Who cares what they look like!! As long as the mail carriers are comfortable and can work with them to deliver all the junk mail, that is what really matters. You do realize that they come basically from Ford, but Oshkosh has made the changes to accommodate USPS.

I love the improved visibility in the front and of course the climate controls but hate how tall this thing is. Our office has a single promaster and although we’re all trained to drive it, it is a hated vehicle that has been tradedd by every route that it’s been given to because of its height. I’d rather suffer the elements than drive a vehicle where I’m constantly worried about clearance. I don’t need to stand in my llv but I need all of the other things this vehicle offers.
