The 2024 Bathurst 1000 was a fight for the Supercars Ford teams in particular. While the Chevy Camaro of Brodie Kostecki soared under the flag stand to win the race, the best Ford Mustang GT mustered a fourth-place finish. That was the No. 6 Mustang of Cam Waters, but as the laps ticked down, the Supercars Ford driver had more on his hands than just on-track action – his cooling suit malfunctioned.
A report from Supercars.com reveals that Waters’ cool suit stopped working, forcing him to fight rising temps inside the cockpit of his No. 6 Supercars Ford. He was undeterred, however, and valiantly held off the No. 25 Mustang of Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth, who came home just behind the Waters/James Moffat machine in fourth.
But the cooling suit problem wasn’t the only issue that the No. 6 Supercars Ford team had to overcome during the enduro race. Waters had a misstep in Hell Corner during his first stint, nocking him off the pace and forcing him to chase the leaders back down. Then, the No. 6 Mustang presented with a brake system issue, but the team elected to endure it instead of losing precious time in the pits to fix it.
“[Waters] was fine. He was just disappointed,” Tickford CEO Simon Brookhouse said. “The brakes thing wasn’t necessarily an issue. He was quite happy with the brakes the way they were. It was as much his call, I think, as it was the engineering team’s call.”
He added, “They asked him whether they wanted to do them at the second last stop, and he said ’No, they’re going great’. So he kept going and he held off Chaz in a bit of a battle there in the last sort of 15 laps. He was good. He’s just disappointed. You know, he yearns to win this race like all drivers do, and he’s had so many chances in the last five years, you know, starting on the front row and being on the podium a couple of times.”
