Though Will Brown, driver of the No. 87 Chevy Camaro in the Australian Supercars Championship, has run away with the points lead with one race remaining in the season, but he’s not out of the woods yet. In fact, two Supercars Ford drivers are still in the hunt for the 2024 title, and they couldn’t help but throw a little shade at Brown ahead of the round at Gold Coast.
Chaz Mostert, driver of the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT, and Cam Waters, who drives the No. 6 Mustang, took lighthearted shots at Brown, according to a report from Supercars.com. There are 600 points still on the table with 150 points up for grabs in each of the two races. Brown has a 204-point lead over second-place Broc Feeney, driver of the No. 88 Camaro, while Waters has a 465-point deficit to overcome if he wants to be the 2024 champion.
It’s not impossible for the Supercars Ford drivers to overtake Brown, but it won’t be easy. If Will slips up, suffers a mechanical failure, or gets caught up in a wreck, it’ll make him an easier target – something Mostert and Waters poked fun at.
“I’m just gonna lick the stamp this weekend and send it,” Mostert said. “And if Will Brown turns down in on me, I’m just gonna send him out into the wall.”
Waters shared a similar sentiment. “I just need to take out all the cars in front of me, every race really, and just keep winning,” he joked.
Even though the Supercars Ford drivers joked about sending Brown, they understand that Gold Coast is a difficult track, and is one that demands respect and attention behind the wheel.
“This track for 250km racing in a concrete jungle and how demanding it is on the drivers and the cars, we have to try and go into a bit of conservation mode,” Mostert said. “It is a really tough, grueling race, especially if your car is being a little bit hard to handle around here, it becomes really long. So hopefully we can dial that car in and make my job a bit easier.”
