Though the Ford Mustang has long been a favorite among Blue Oval fans, enthusiasts, and collectors alike, certain models aren’t quite as popular – or as valuable – as others. Though the Fox Body generation has long been among the more popular and heavily coveted Ford Mustang models in that regard, it isn’t true of the earlier “four-eyed” models as they’re affectionately known. However, collectors are starting to warm up to these earlier Foxes, which bodes well for this 1984 Ford Mustang 20th Anniversary Limited Edition model.
This anniversary 1984 Ford Mustang is up for auction over at Hagerty, and it looks to be in pretty excellent condition, though mileage is unknown. These special models were available in both fastback and convertible guise, though all of them were finished in Oxford White with a Canyon Red interior. The exterior also holds unique styling cues such as bodyside moldings and GT350 graphics, while the interior was adorned with a special anniversary instrument cluster appliqué, as well as vintage pony ornamentation.
Buyers could choose from either the turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder engine or the naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8, though in this case, the drop top is fitted with the latter – which was factory-rated at 175 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque – mated to the four-speed automatic transmission. In total, Ford built just 5,261 units of the anniversary 1984 Mustang, making it a desirable machine, even if it doesn’t bear any of the performance upgrades one would expect from a proper Shelby GT350 model. This particular model has received a frame-on restoration with fresh paint, a revamped interior, a new top, and a rebuilt engine, to boot.
Typically, when we see Fox Body pony cars of this age pop up for auction, they’re SVO models – which have become quite collectible over the years. Recently, we’ve seen a pair of very nicely-kept SVOs surface for sale, in fact, including one with 33k miles, and another with just 13k miles.
