Though it has faced its fair share of recalls since launching for the 2022 model year, the Ford Maverick isn’t immune to other issues that don’t quite necessitate a full-blown recall. Rather, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and Special Service Messages (SSMs) are generally utilized to address those types of common issues, and that’s also true of one pertaining to a problem with the 12-volt battery in certain Ford Maverick hybrid pickups.
Ford has issued SSM 53087 for select 2022-2024 Ford Maverick hybrid models after it discovered that in those pickups, the 12-volt battery can drain intermittently. This reportedly occurs when the ignition is turned off, which can be a problem, particularly for trucks that sit for long periods of time. To rectify the problem, Ford is instructing dealers to disconnect the negative 12-volt battery terminal for five minutes, then fully charge the battery, and using either the Rotunda GRX-3590 or DCA-8000 tester, determine if a replacement is
needed.
If the dealer determines that a replacement is needed, they’ll need to fully charge the new unit and perform a battery monitor sensor (BMS) reset. In the meantime, Ford is working on a software solution for this problem that’s expected to be ready in Q1 2025, at which point it will inform dealers and customers.
Interestingly, it isn’t just Ford Maverick hybrids that have had documented issues with their 12-volt batteries, either. Rather, as Ford Authority previously reported, select 2022 EcoBoost models have been recalled twice over an issue where the body and power train control modules may fail to detect a change in the 12-volt battery state of charge. This can result in a loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights, or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. To rectify the problem, Ford instructed dealers to recalibrate the body control module and power train control module.

It is also an issue with my 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid! For example 12v battery dead in driveway after 3 months of driving 1.5 hours x 5 days a week. Software updates done, battery tests fine. I still get intermittent messages on vehicle app “remote features disabled to conserve battery”. It’s great having to hook up a battery tender on a year old vehicle to make sure it starts. After numerous complaints, updates and testing. I may be old school but putting a tiny ride on tractor battery in to save money, at least here in Canada … Is probably the issue.
But even after offering to pay the difference for a “real” battery, that will physically fit, the idea is dismissed by stealer. Never again!
